Correcting Transport Errors During Advection of Aerosol and Cloud Moment Sequences in Eulerian Models

چکیده

The method of moments (MOM) provides a highly efficient approach to tracking particle populations, be they aerosols or cloud droplets. In the case of aerosols the method is a statistically based alternative to bin-sectional and modal approaches [Wright et al., 2000]. In the case of clouds, where moments are often the desired product of a simulation for comparisons with radar and satellite observations, the MOM can replace the bin-sectional method. Recent studies have begun looking at the inclusion of higher-order moments, beyond droplet mixing ratio, for improving the representation of cloud microphysics in models [Van Weverberg et al., 2011; Milbrandt and McTaggart-Cowan, 2010].

Numerical advection of correlated tracers: Preserving particle size/composition moment sequences during transport of aerosol mixtures

Nonlinear transport algorithms designed to reduce numerical diffusion fail to preserve correlations between moments, isotope abundances, etc. when these scalar densities are transported in models as separate tracers. In case of the particle size/composition coordinates of an aerosol, such loss can give rise to unphysical moment sets. New statistical approaches to aerosol dynamics, which involve...

Simulations of transport in one dimension

Advection-dispersion equation is solved in numerically by using combinations of differential quadrature method (DQM) and various time integration techniques covering some explicit or implicit single and multi step methods. Two different initial boundary value problems modeling conservative and nonconservative transports of some substance represented by initial data are chosen as test problems. ...

Description and Evaluation of a Six-moment Aerosol Microphysical Module for Use in Atmospheric Chemical Transport Models

We describe and evaluate a six-moment aerosol microphysical module, 6M, designed for implementation in atmospheric chemical transport models (CTMs). 6M is based upon the Quadrature Method Of Moments (QMOM) [McGraw, 1997] and the Multiple Isomomental Distribution Aerosol Surrogate (MIDAS) method [Wright, 2000]. 6M evolves the lowest six radial moments of H2SO4-H2O aerosols for a comprehensive se...

Impact of cloud-borne aerosol representation on aerosol direct and indirect effects

Aerosol particles attached to cloud droplets are much more likely to be removed from the atmosphere and are much less efficient at scattering sunlight than if unattached. Models used to estimate direct and indirect effects of aerosols employ a variety of representations of such cloud-borne particles. Here we use a global aerosol model with a relatively complete treatment of cloud-borne particle...

Three-dimensional analytical models for time-dependent coefficients through uniform and varying plane input source in semi-infinite adsorbing porous media.

In the present study, analytical solutions are developed for three-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) in semi-infinite adsorbing saturated homogeneous porous medium with time dependent dispersion coefficient. It means porosity of the medium is filled with single fluid(water). Dispersion coefficient is considered proportional to seepage velocity while adsorption coefficient inversel...
